Off Shore Report: We are in the transition from winter to spring and fishing off Islamorada has been great! We have been catching Yellow Tail Snapper along the edge of Davis reef. Most of the Yellow Tail have been of good size and seem to really like shrimp. Other baits obviously work, however a fresh peeled shrimp on a gold hook does wonders. Productivity and attention to detail go hand in hand when fishing the waters off Islamorada. Sailfish action has been good also near and around Conch Reef. Most of the Sailfish activity has been during the first few hours of the morning.
Further off shore the Tunas have been cooperating at the 409 and Islamorada Hump. Most of the Tunas have been around 3 pounds and have been very cooperative to eat a variety of bait/lures. The size of the Tunas can vary from day to day since other schools of bigger fish will often stop at the humps as they migrate towards the northeast.
Down deeper the Amberjacks are in full force. Plenty for everyone with the strength to land them. Look out for the sharks it seems like there are more sharks than Jacks.
Some Mahi action has been reported and will increase as we get closer to April. Mahi Mahi is the Islamorada favorite.
People come from all over the world to catch them here. Don’t be discouraged from previous reports there were plenty of fish last year and there will be plenty this year.
Off Shore Forecast: Look for more Mahi action in the up coming weeks along with Black Fin Tunas. Don’t be surprised if the Wahoo start pouring through as well. Some spring seasons are better than others and Islamorada has been notorious for amazing big fish catches.
Back Country Report: Speckled Sea Trout are the fish of the month. All of the Whale Harbor Back Country guides have been topping off their fishing trips with limits of Trout. It seems that anglers are enjoying great Snook fishing in Florida Bay and around the cape. Some Redfish action and Mangrove Snappers around Sandy Key during the falling tide. Further in the Gulf of Mexico Spanish Mackerel have been caught in good numbers.
